Inflammatory bowel disease is a challenging digestive problem. Many refer to this as "IBD" for short. Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of conditions that are inflammatory and affect various components of the digestive system such as the colon as well as the intestines. There are many different conditions that are considered to be part of inflammatory bowel disease.

Examples of the diseases that are classified in this group of disorders include, but are not limited to: Crohn's disease, diversion colitis, and even the popular condition known as ulcerative colitis. In this medical guide, you will learn important facts pertaining to inflammatory bowel disease.

Causes of IBD

Medical professionals have been researching inflammatory bowel disease for many years. Unfortunately, they have been unable to determine one particular cause for the condition. Based on this fact, this is considered to be a disease that is identified as "idiopathic". This means, in medical terms, that there is no cause.

It has been established that there are certain triggers that prompt the immune system of the body to cause inflammation to occur in the digestive system. As time progresses, the inflammation continues to spread and the individual experiencing this has no way to control it. The walls that line the intestinal tract are then damaged. As a result, gastrointestinal complications may arise.

Symptoms

Inflammatory bowel disease is considered to be a chronic condition. This basically means that it affects an individual for a long time. Many individuals will experience only mild symptoms and others will experience symptoms that are quite severe. The following represents a good portion of the symptoms that are typically experienced with this digestive problem:

• Many individuals will experience pain and even cramping in the abdominal area.

• Many will suffer from bouts of diarrhea and/or constipation. In some instances, these bouts are accompanied by bleeding.

• It is common for those that have inflammatory bowel disease to experience a loss of appetite and even fluctuations in weight.

• It is common for sufferers to feel as if they have an intense need or an urgency to relieve the bowels when they suffer from this particular complication.

• Ulcers may develop in those that suffer from gastrointestinal complications such as IBD. It is common for those that experience this issue to suffer from ulcers that bleed when irritated by stomach acid, foods, and beverages.

• Many that suffer from this condition will experience bouts of extreme pain and high levels of discomfort when engaging in a bowel movement.

If you feel as if you may be suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, it is important that you set up an appointment with a medical professional in order to confirm the diagnosis. Once confirmed, the doctor will place you on a treatment plan that will assist in providing relief.
